Natural outdoor environments is a key facility when tending to autistic needs. A clean outdoor space has demonstrated to reduce stress, enhance emotional resilience, facilitate functional and imaginative play. Having the opportunity to provide such a space for my students has the potential to support their cognitive functioning.
Creating different activities for sensory purposes that can improve the students coordination, cognitive function, social skills, problem-solving and can put them at ease. Throughout my experience I have seen the benefits in these activities reducing stress levels, improve self-awareness, refine gross and fine motor skills and improving communication skills. Using art within these activities develops their social skills, increase self-confidence. Art can give a person a sense of control as they learn to adapt to the task in their own way. Drawing and painting can also help to improve and maintain fine motor skills. Creative arts can be an effective way to engage with the person in a non-pressurised way.
